Destruction of Malodorous Compounds Using Heterogeneous Photocatalysis

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Photocatalytic oxidation of the sulfur-containing compounds, trimethylene sulfide (C3H6S), propylene sulfide (C3H6S), thiophene (C4H4S), and methyl disulfide (C2H6S2), was carried out using an annular plug flow reactor with TiO2 in a supported form. Formation of products and byproducts was monitored in real time using a mass spectrometry online system. Mineralization of the sulfur-containing compounds was confirmed by mass balance of CO2 and SO4. Dilute contaminated atmospheres of trimethylene sulfide and propylene sulfide were completely mineralized. For thiophene and methyl disulfide, however, partial oxidation was observed, generating sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfur oxide (SO) as byproducts, which were confirmed by parent ion MS/MS spectra as well as by chemical ionization. Sensory analysis showed that for trimethylene sulfide and propylene sulfide, odor intensity after TiO2/UV treatment was below the olfactive threshold limit of the panel.

PCCP Perspective Revisiting the Fundamental Physical Chemistry in Heterogeneous Photocatalysis: Its Thermodynamics and Kinetics

Although the history of photocatalysis research is not so long, many researchers have studied photocatalysis and a large number of papers on photocatalysis have been published. The objectives of this review paper are to revisit the fundamentals of photocatalysis, especially its thermodynamics and kinetics, which have not been reexamined in recent studies, to clarify the problems, if any, that p...

Equilibrium sampling used to monitor malodors in a Swine waste lagoon.

The concentrations of malodorous compounds in a 0.4-ha anaerobic lagoon that received waste from approximately 2000 sows were monitored during the late summer to late fall of 2006 to gain insight into the factors influencing their concentrations. Selected malodorous compounds were measured by the use of equilibrium samplers consisting of submersible stir plates and stir bar sorbtive sampling wi...

Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants in Water

A photocatalyst is defined as a substance which is activated by adsorbing a photon and is capable of accelerating a reaction without being consumed [1]. These substances are invaria‐ bly semiconductors. Semiconducting oxide photocatalysts have been increasingly focused in recent years due to their potential applications in solar energy conversion and environmen‐ tal purification. Semiconductor ...

Mechanistic considerations for the advanced oxidation treatment of fluoroquinolone pharmaceutical compounds using TiO(2) heterogeneous catalysis.

Pharmaceutical compounds and metabolites are being found in surface and ground waters which is indicative of inefficient removal by conventional wastewater treatment technologies. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), which utilize free-radical reactions to degrade chemical contaminates, are an alternative to traditional water treatment. Three fluoroquinolone pharmaceutical compounds were studie...
